Lan Livermore is a non-binary, multi-disciplinary artist based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Their work is an expression of their inner world, demonstrating their strong self-awareness through bright colors, intimate compositions, and a dash of humor. They use their practice to explore the relationship with the vessel they inhabit, as well as how that vessel connects to spirit, ancestry, and the world around them, and in turn, themself.Lan practices experimental printmaking and collage, using accessible and inexpensive materials such as found books and magazines, old milk cartons, thrift store finds, and craft materials from the dollar store. This embodied approach roots their work in the world around them, grounding abstract questions of identity in the physical world. They build their work intuitively, as if guided by a force beyond themself, and they use this movement to process the impermanence of all things. Change is often an important subject of their work.
Through bright colors and raw textures, this collection is an exploration of identity and the deep process of feeling that comes with that. Growth is more often than not, a visceral, uncomfortable mess of emotions. In my experience, it comes when we finally learn to loosen the grip on what is begging to be let go of. This kind of change is the only constant we can rely on, and my pieces are a way for me to lean into and build a safe space inside of that fact. I have created my work intuitively, listening to how the aspects of a piece complement each other. They came together in a stream of consciousness, almost like the visual manifestation of a personal journal entry. This collection is built on organic honesty and self-awareness, with some solid elements of design, as a study of what it means to accept loss and embrace change.
